Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle support.
