A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
